Bastiaan Luijk has a passion for digital design and production techniques. In 2019, he founded Studio BL and is pursuing a role as a digital artisan:
“The freedom of my own studio gives me the opportunity to further develop ideas gained during study, travel and work experience. In practice, this means a lot of experimenting and prototyping: the work is created through the interaction between algorithmic design and digital manufacturing methods, especially 3D printing. The digital design experiments also produce unexpected results, which often inspire new ideas and applications.”
The studio’s designs are based on research, intuition and professional experience in the field of architecture, design and engineering. The end result is often functional, such as lamps. Sometimes they are ornaments with room for interpretation by the viewer. The common thread in the work is the search for a connecting formal language, which is expressed in shapes and patterns with natural, harmonious properties such as Fibonacci series, golden ratio and symmetry.
